Conventional vs. Holistic
Holistic medicine approaches the body as a dynamic interconnected system like a garden. If one component such as rainfall is lacking in a garden, it disturbs the balance of the entire system. The garden contrasts with a machine, the metaphor appropriate for conventional medicine. If one pipe is dry, the remainder of the machine may run unaffected.
3 Types of Gardens
Pictured above we have an industrial garden. It is large scale, one size fits all approach, which regards all outside natural processes besides the crop itself as dangerous. It treats crops with insecticide just as conventional medicine might treat disease with antibiotics.
In the middle, is depicted an organic garden. It is midscale generic farming. It uses natural fertilizers to supplement the soil just as integrative medicine might load patient with many supplements to prop up health.
Below, we have a biodynamic garden. It is a unique garden arranged in harmony with the season, climate, the lunar cycle and all other the surrounding forces of nature, just as natural medicine achieves health by aligning people with the natural rhythms of nature.
Aligning with Nature
Nature is in a dynamic flow of balance. A precipitation build up may be relieved by a thunderstorm. Naturopathy trusts that the body contains the inherent wisdom to enter that flow and achieve balance. Often people know what is wrong but cannot change it.
Naturopathic medicine supports a person's native physiology so that they have the resources to unwind their disease process. This is achieved through homeopathic remedies, lifestyle, and other supportive therapies. The lemniscate is a symbol of flow within the body. There is an upper pole (the head) and lower pole (the torso) in rhythmic exchange through the center (the heart).
